LAKE SARANAC — There are still 15 slots open for budding musicians at a week-long Mountain Melodies music camp in mid-July, and scholarships are available to fully pay for three campers to attend.

Camp organizer Carolyn Greenberg said campers will work with five certified music teachers, have access to TrestleStreet’s “children’s zoo” of instruments and equipment, and work on songs to play together.

Campers will all work to choral arrangements, but Greenberg said sessions will be flexible. They will have their pick of music-making crash courses to focus on. Greenberg called these “tasters”.

These will include sessions with lessons in singing, lyric writing, music theory, covers and digital music. Greenberg said digital music, like production or electronic music, isn’t taught as often, but by the end of the week campers will have been able to produce a ringtone, soundscape or short song.

It’s a half-day, week-long camp, so Greenberg said campers won’t come out as virtuosos or incredibly knowledgeable about music theory. She said the goal was to inspire a passion for creating music, create a community of young people making music with friends, and give them life skills to build on.

Campers will come out with “campfire guitar skills,” which is always invaluable, she said.

“If you learn three or four chords on the guitar, you can play literally thousands of songs,” Greenberg said.

The camp is for students in grades 4-12. It will run daily from July 18-22 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The camp will be hosted at TrestleStreet, a community music and arts space on Woodruff Street in Saranac. Lake. Inside the halls of TrestleStreet, there are instruments everywhere – horns, banjos, guitars, ukuleles, pianos, drums and many percussion instruments.

Half of the 30 places available for the camp are occupied, but there are still 15 left.

Camp registration is $125. Greenberg said two community members have reached out to offer scholarships to pay for anyone who can’t afford it. Three of these scholarships are available.

At the end of camp, they’ll have a song to perform on the Third Thursday Art Walk on July 21, a showcase for their parents to perform, and ideally, Greenberg said, a passion for making music a lifelong endeavor. .

Greenberg and her husband are from New Jersey. They bought a home in Saranac Lake before the pandemic shutdowns began in 2020 and have split their time interstate since then.

She said she has found so much art and music in Saranac Lake that she wants to make sure the next generation learns the skills and motivation to acquire those talents.

Greenberg has been playing the piano and singing since the age of 8, around the same age as the youngest members of the camp. She said she was lucky to have always had an outlet for it, whether it was through church productions, high school choirs or the rock bands she was in.

She always had a place to use her musical talents and thinks that’s what made her grow up, study and want to teach music.

“I found real applications for my music,” Greenberg said. “It’s also part of the camp’s goal, to ignite their passion for music, but also to see real ways to use music.”

The teachers at the camp are all certified in music education and come from the Northeast.

Greenberg said Rebecca Saltzman, a choral music teacher at Simsbury High School in Connecticut, is “one of the best teachers I’ve ever seen.” Greenberg said Saltzman taught his daughter Abigail. Abby is now a teacher at George Washington Middle School in Ridgewood, New Jersey, because of Saltzman, Carolyn said, and will teach at camp as well.

Abigail also brings in two friends, musicians and fellow University of Delaware graduates – Nathan Bischoff and Alyssa Bernstein.

The first phone call was made in 1973 by the “father of the cell phone”, Marty Cooper. He used a prototype Motorola phone that laid the foundation for the first commercially available cell phone 10 years later.

“The battery life on this phone was less than half an hour of talk time,” Marty told Kim Komando in a radio interview last year. “Turns out that wasn’t a problem, Kim, because you couldn’t hold that phone to your ear for 25 minutes, it was so heavy!” Tap or click here to hear what Marty said to rival AT&T’s project manager when he made the very first phone call.

The first cell phones had two functions: talking and listening. Text messaging, cameras and apps came later. Some of us remember the first clumsy phones from the 1980s, while others belong to the flip phone generation. We’ve rounded up 10 of the most iconic cellphones in history to bring you back.

1.Motorola DynaTAC 8000X

The first cell phone that wasn’t tied to a car or small suitcase was Motorola’s DynaTAC 8000X, released in 1983. It cost $3,995, or $10,950 today. Although this phone was not intended for the mass market, it was the first true mobile phone that could connect to a network with the need for a carrier.

These phones are considered collectibles and cost a pretty penny on eBay.

2. T-Mobile’s sidekick

Originally called Hiptop, the Sidekick was introduced in 2002 by T-Mobile. It had a monochrome screen that could rotate 180 degrees. Swipe the screen and you’ll find a full QWERTY keyboard and trackball.

The Sidekick wasn’t the first smartphone, but it featured downloadable apps, email, instant messaging, and even cloud service.

The Sidekick has become a status symbol for celebrities. Do a Google search for Sidekick phones from the 2000s and you’ll find it in the hands of top movie stars, athletes and musicians.

3.Motorola Razr V3

The Razr was launched in 2004 and once again cooled flip phones. The Razr V3 had a 1.3 megapixel camera, a color screen, and a sleek aluminum body. The Razr had been on the market for four years and sold 130 million units, making it the most popular flip phone of all time.

A hot pink version was released in 2005, and our very own Kim Komando wore one.

Motorola released a new version of the Razr in 2020 with an OLED display and a 16-megapixel camera. Tap or click here to view our rollback report.

4. Mulberry Pearl

BlackBerry started out as a pager brand and in 2006 took its share of the smartphone market with the Pearl, named for the backlit rollerball above the keyboard. The Pearl lacked a full keyboard and used predictive input to keep the design slim.

Production of the Pearl lasted four years, with improvements in camera, storage capacity and resolution. A flip version of the Pearl was released in 2008. The Pearl is the best-selling BlackBerry phone with 15 million units sold.

5.Nokia 3310

You know your phone is a hit when it becomes a meme. The Nokia 3310 was released in 2000 and has since earned a reputation as the most powerful mobile phone ever made. A quick Google search will reveal videos of the 3310 being shot down, run over and dropped from the tops of buildings.

This Nokia’s 3310 isn’t exactly “smart” by today’s standards, and it lacked a camera. But there was a stopwatch, calculator, SMS messaging, and support for a few games.

The 3310 sold 126 million units during its five-year run. Nokia relaunched the 3310 in 2017, updating the phone with a web browser, voice recorder and 2-megapixel camera.

6.Apple iPhone 6/6 Plus

The iPhone ushered in the touchscreen when the first model launched in 2007, and every other manufacturer followed suit. By the time the iPhone 6 was released in 2014, Apple had firmly established itself as a major player in the smartphone world.

The iPhone 6 featured Apple’s first Retina HD display, which was praised for its brightness and color. The 6 Plus was Apple’s first full-size model, with a 5.5-inch display. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are among the best-selling mobile phones of all time, with 220 million units sold.

7. LG Chocolate Phone

LG’s Chocolate slider phone was released in North America in 2006 with a QVGA display, MP3 player, 1.3 megapixel camera and circular touchscreen.

The Chocolate had a sliding panel that hid a traditional number pad. Rumor has it that early versions of the original LG Chocolate smartphone smelled like chocolate. The first generation chocolate sold 21 million units.

8. Samsung Galaxy Note 7

This one is more infamous than iconic. Samsung popularized the phablet with its Galaxy Note series, which lasted 10 years and ended in 2021. The Galaxy Note 7 was launched in August 2016 and was pulled from the market two months later.

The Note 7 was Samsung’s first phone to feature a USB-C connector. It featured a 5.7-inch curved OLED screen, a 12-megapixel rear camera, and an iris recognition system to unlock the phone. The phone proved popular when it was launched and sold well.

Then the fires happened. Note 7 users were reporting that their phones were overheating and catching fire. This was due to a battery fault which caused a short circuit. Samsung released software updates to limit battery drain and recalled units to replace their batteries, but those also caught fire.

Although overheating issues only affected a small percentage of phones, the FAA banned these phones from all flights. Samsung has recalled all Note 7s and sent fire-retardant bags for customers to use for returns. The Note 7 even made our list of epic tech failures.

9. Samsung Galaxy S3

If anyone had a chance to rival Apple’s iPhone behemoth, it was Samsung. The first Galaxy S was released in 2010 and was well received for its processor speed, camera and audio quality.

The Galaxy S3 was launched in 2012 with a marketing campaign that denounced the iPhone and its loyal customers. The S3 had a 4.8-inch OLED display, NFC capability, and wireless charging. Galaxy S3 users could touch their phones together to share content.

The S3 and its variants have sold 80 million units, making it Samsung’s most popular phone. Has Samsung redeemed itself from the catastrophic Note 7? It’s up to you to decide.

10.Nokia 1100

That’s it. The best-selling mobile phone of all time is the Nokia 1100, with 250 million units ending up in our hands. The 1100 was introduced in 2003 and had a production run of six years.

The Nokia 1100 had programmable ringtones, a stopwatch, calculator and flashlight and was available in neat colors. The lack of features contributed to the long battery life.

The Nokia 1100 sold for around $100, making it popular in countries where smartphones were a luxury beyond the reach of the general population.

Apple’s Contacts app might not seem like the most vital part of iOS, but behind the scenes it powers a lot of what makes iPhones useful.

It’s true that you literally don’t need Apple’s Contacts app. Not because there are third-party alternatives like Cardhop, and not even because – for historical reasons – the Phone app duplicates its functionality.

You can delete the Contacts app, and if you did that now – and you could also delete the Phone app – you’d still have all your old contacts. They automatically completed each other when you went to message someone.

The Contacts app is so hidden that it’s even likely that you have many email addresses of friends and co-workers that you haven’t saved there. Apple Mail retains previous and auto-complete recipient addresses as if they were in the Contacts app.

You need to add them to Contacts because if something goes wrong with Mail or something goes wrong when you switch to a new Mac, you might lose them.

So there’s a clear reason to add them to Contacts, but there are also plenty of other reasons to take the time to use Contacts properly.

The thing to remember is that Apple’s Contacts app is just an editor, it’s how you create, edit or delete that information. The reason there are alternatives like BusyContacts is that it doesn’t offer you a lot of features for editing.

Yet whether you use BusyContacts, Cardhop, or Apple’s Contacts app, you’re really working with the same database. Just like with calendars, you can find several different apps that may suit you better than Apple’s, but each uses the same calendar database at its core.

Only Contacts is so integrated into the core of iOS that it powers dozens of Apple’s best features across the entire operating system.

It doesn’t matter if you never plan to buy them a cake, if you put someone’s birthday in your Contacts card for them, it has benefits.

The most obvious is that their birthday will appear on your calendar, for starters.

Pay attention to this, however. Contacts will let you add only the day and month of their birthday, and that should be enough, but it’s not quite.

It’s about knowing when to say happy birthday, but at some point it’s going to be a very important birthday. Sometimes you don’t know more, but currently Apple’s Contacts app requires a year, so maybe you put today’s year or the year you met.

There have been times, and there have been applications, where you didn’t have to put in a year.

And whatever the cause of the omission, or whatever year you make, you may find yourself being notified of your mother-in-law’s “2nd birthday.”

It’s unlikely that’s correct, but if in fact it’s such an important birthday that you should have been there – and bought a present – then you better give her a call. And have flowers or photos.

On iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, if you’ve entered someone’s birthday in your Contacts app, it’ll show up on all your devices. And it will appear in every place where it is possible to be.

Such as Pictures. Go to Photos on your iPhone and tap the For you button.

Your iPhone has automatically organized a series of Memories scrapbooks. And yes, it uses Contacts to do that.

Not entirely. There can be as many albums based on the places you’ve visited as there are people’s ages.

But those with their ages have surfaced at the appropriate time of year.

Call his name

Even if you don’t know many birthdays, you benefit from the ordinary and regular information you put in Contacts. You have to put it on and you have to keep it up to date, but the finer details help.

For example, if you have a name and a cell phone number, you can say “Hey, Siri, phone Susan Hare”. Siri will then do that and won’t ask you anything because it sees in your contacts database that you only know one person with that name.

And, also, he can see that you only have one phone number. So he just dials that number.

There is also an additional intelligence here, which applies whenever there is ambiguity. If you know two people named Susan Hare and you just ask Siri to phone her, she might know that you’ve been calling her twice a day, and the other hasn’t since sixth grade.

However, you might save Siri some trouble and save yourself a tiny bit of effort by saying “Hey, Siri, call my sister.” Or you could if you had taken a moment to specify “sister” in her Contacts card.

When she also calls you back, you can make your iPhone play a different ringtone. Or you can, if you have it set up. You’ll never guess where.

Memories from Photos is powered by many things, including your calendar and location, but it also gets details from Contacts

Memories from Photos is powered by many things, including your calendar and location, but it also gets details from Contacts

It’s not Apple’s prettiest app, and it would be nice if you could just click on a Contacts card to work on it. As it stands, you need to find who you want to add details to, then click Edit.

This at least means that you are unlikely to edit a contact card by accident.

Once you edit someone, however, and put their name in, you then get eight default options. They include the addition

  1. Phone number
  2. Personal email
  3. Alarm
  4. text tone
  5. Site home page
  6. Birthday
  7. A second phone number
  8. social media
  9. Home Address
  10. To note

If this is a company you are entering information for, you can check a box to indicate that it is a company. And if it’s company staff, you can add their company name next to theirs.

You can also select any of the home coordinates and edit them to work.

Some of these details vary depending on where you are and what location you perform. US users have the option of a postcode, for example, where UK users see “Postcode” instead.

Explore options

Except for the Note field, Birthday, Ringtone, and Text Tone, all other items come with options. Click on the mobile phone number and you get 10 alternatives, from mobile to business fax.

You even get Apple Watch as an option, for friends who prefer you call them on their separate watch number.

Additionally, there is an 11th choice, the “Other” tote. And a 12th, “Custom”.

This is typical for each section. But if you take the time to fill in everything you know, that information comes back to you when it’s most useful.

You can always turn to the Contacts app to check a detail or start a phone call. But you can also see their name on the screen if they call you, for example.

Apple’s Contacts app looks basic at first, but then it can feel a bit of a chore when you see all the things you can add and edit there. But at the same time, it’s like that extra brain in your iPhone that brings you the information you need, when you need it.

Some people still have to use old Rolodex card systems, but they probably don’t have a Mac yet.

Erling Haaland has revealed the UEFA Champions League anthem is always his ringtone and says nights in Europe’s top competition are more “special” for him.

After months and months of speculation, Manchester City have finally confirmed the signing of the 21-year-old, who has moved to the Etihad Stadium on a five-year contract. He brings with him an incredible goalscoring pedigree, scoring almost one goal per game at Borussia Dortmund.

The Blues are also hoping the Norwegian will make a difference in key Champions League games. Last season City suffered Champions League heartbreak in the semi-finals. Despite dominating for 178 minutes of the draw, Real Madrid produced a stunning comeback in injury time to extend the game – with Karim Benzema’s penalty sending the eventual champions to Paris.

READ MORE: Erling Haaland explains why he chose Man City in his first post-transfer words

During his first interview for the club, Haaland was asked about his outstanding record in the Champions League, where the clinical striker scored 23 goals in just 19 appearances.

Responding to a question about why his record is so good, Haaland said: “I still love the Champions League, so that’s a bit for that. It’s a bit more special in my eyes and I like that.”

There’s no doubt that the Norwegian’s arrival significantly improves City’s chances of claiming European glory. Pep Guardiola has lamented that his side have missed key chances in the past but Haaland’s goalscoring record and sense of danger will be a valuable asset on this front.

Whether he can maintain the same scoring consistency remains to be seen, but his inclusion will give defenders even more danger to manage and the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva a gigantic presence to target.

Despite being such an aerial threat, the striker’s ability to maneuver the ball close to his feet and produce a moment of quick acceleration is perhaps quite underrated in his game. One goal in particular – against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League – showed all his qualities in a quick moment.

Dropping deep to receive the ball, a great turn and run, beating his man and sending the ball into the top corner.

Europe’s biggest stage is made for a player like him, so it’s probably no surprise that Haaland still has the classic Champions League anthem as his ringtone – as confirmed today.

After reaching their first-ever final in 2021 and falling so close to a second in 2022, City will be hoping Haaland is that man to take the next step and finally get their hands on a trophy that has long eluded them.

Bharti Airtel, the second largest telecom operator in the country, has introduced “smart missed call alerts” for users. With this feature, users will be able to see missed call alerts when their SIM card is out of network coverage. It’s not a unique feature and it’s something Jio users already get. Airtel Smart Missed Call Alerts will be visible to users when they go to Airtel Thanks app and find the Missed Call Alerts section.

It is, in fact, an indispensable service that the users of the telecommunications operator will certainly appreciate. Sometimes we miss very important calls just because we are out of network coverage and don’t even know them because we didn’t hear the ringtone or see a missed call notification on the phone app. ‘call. But with smart missed call alerts, users will be able to see all missed calls when their SIM card was out of network coverage.

Airtel Customers Who Can Use Smart Missed Call Alerts Feature

If you are an Airtel mobile customer, whether you are a prepaid user or a postpaid user, you will be able to take advantage of the Smart Missed Call feature of the Airtel Thanks app. Any Airtel user with an active voice call connection can avail this feature regardless of the type of plan they are subscribed to.

As mentioned above, Reliance Jio users are already enjoying this service. Jio notifies its customers that they had a missed call when their device was out of coverage via direct text message, which is more convenient than going to a mobile app to check it every time.

If you are not an Airtel customer and want to become one, just visit any of the company’s nearest retail stores or order it online through the phone company’s official website. You can get a new SIM card from the comfort of your home.

The charge: Ravinda

Derek’s phone is constantly ringing, beeping, chiming and buzzing – and it’s driving me crazy

My boyfriend Derek never puts his phone on silent and it drives me crazy. We recently moved in together after three years of dating and now work remotely in the same apartment for most of the week.

I noticed it before, but now that we’re living together, it’s driving me crazy. He likes to have his phone on full volume all the time. Europe’s final countdown sounds every time he gets a call, and he’s got those bells ringing for his app notifications and text messages. He takes a lot of calls and I constantly hear his phone beeping, chiming and buzzing.

I asked him if he could keep his phone on silent, but he says the alerts help him stay focused and on top of his job. I tell him the world won’t stop spinning if he doesn’t immediately respond to a text or a call from a customer, but he won’t get it. I used to like to sit at the table with him while we worked, but now I’ve retired to the little office we have in the guest room. I can’t concentrate with all the noise.

It’s not just work – he keeps his phone on in the evenings too. Our conversations and private time are constantly interrupted by alerts announcing certain Instagram updates.

Derek’s phone is constantly glued to his hand and it lights up when it rings. It’s a dopamine thing, I guess. I think he’s addicted to it.

The only other people I know who have their phones on full volume are people over 60 who aren’t very tech savvy. Derek and I are only in our thirties. He must know how to use his telephone in silent mode.

At night, I forced him to put his iPhone on “do not disturb” mode so we could sleep uninterrupted, but even that was a big deal for him. He said, “What if there’s an emergency?” But if it’s midnight, we shouldn’t be bothered.

Derek suffers from Phone Fomo (fear of missing something), but he has to turn the volume down when working around the house. If he doesn’t, I’ll have to ask him to move into a coworking space. I can not stand him anymore.

Defense: Derek

Phone notifications are supposed to play a sound. This is how notifications work

My phone sound is always on. Phones make a sound for a reason – so we can track our notifications and messages. I don’t know why Ravinda is so offended by this concept. Having sound isn’t an “old people” thing, as Ravinda always jokes. A lot of people I know think keeping your phone on silent is boring.

I don’t have a particularly stressful job, but I work from home and run my own digital marketing business. I’m constantly arranging calls and responding to my clients, so of course I want to keep everyone happy. Ravinda’s role isn’t as complete as mine, so maybe she doesn’t understand. Yes, my phone volume is turned up to maximum, but I like it that way. I don’t think my ringtone is any more annoying than the next person’s, and my notification sound is the default option on the iPhone.

Sign up for our Inside Saturday newsletter for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of the magazine’s biggest stories, plus a curated list of our weekly highlights.

Maybe I get a little pleasure from feeling busy all the time. I don’t want to miss what’s happening during the working day and in the evening, I like to keep up to date with social media posts. I also have sound alerts for my emails and news topics that interest me: anything related to crypto, for example.

I used to keep the sound on overnight when my phone was charging by my bed, but I stopped that at Ravinda’s request. Guess it’s better for both of us if we can sleep without it ringing. Sometimes I worry about missing a last-minute client request or financial update.

Ravinda said she couldn’t work next to me because of my phone alerts, but that’s not true. We’re both in meetings and on calls frequently, so it’s best to have our own space so we don’t distract each other. It’s not my phone’s fault that we have to work from home.

I can try to be more present after work and not be so focused on my notifications when they aren’t super important. But I will continue to have my phone at full volume. It makes my life easier.

The Guardian Readers’ Jury

Should Derek put his phone on silent?

Derek, there’s no need for full volume and all the alerts bleeding into your home life. There’s no excuse for this level of intrusion: you can receive notifications via vibrating alerts or a smartwatch. The lack of compromise shows a lack of consideration for Ravinda. Be the best person here.
Simon, 48 years old

Derek must be wondering why he gets so much of his self-esteem from customers and pings on his phone. Rather than undermine Ravinda, he should think about accommodating and prioritizing his presence when they share space and time.
Sophia, 34 years old

Maybe Derek and Ravinda can work in separate rooms in “office” houses, so Derek’s phone can be as loud as he wants. Because even when one phone is on silent, phone conversations from one will distract the other when sharing a workspace.
Tone, 61

Sharing work space and home space requires negotiation and compromise. For harmony, Derek must find a decibel level and a pleasing tone in Ravinda. It’s a pleasure to put your phone on silent!
Sharon, 54 years old

Derek is guilty. It’s inconsiderate to have your phone on full volume without a very good reason, especially when people are trying to work. It should either work elsewhere or get a different, quieter notification setup, like a smartwatch that vibrates.
Catherine, 25 years old

you are the judge

So now you can be the judge. In our online poll below, tell us: Should Derek put his phone on silent?

We’ll share the results on the You Be The Judge show next week.

The poll will end on Thursday, June 16 at 9:00 a.m. BST

Last week’s result

We asked if Sally should start cleaning up her old books, as the mess annoys her husband Andy.

79% of you said no – Sally is innocent
21% of you said yes – Sally is guilty

This week, Mortgage Solutions speaks with Sian Varone, Business Development Manager for Accord Mortgages covering London.

What locations and how many advisors and brokerage firms do you cover in your role?

Very lucky to cover the top of the London circle to include Harrow, East/North London and Romford in particular. I work with about 700+ brokers in my area.

How have you changed the way you build and maintain a good relationship with brokers during the pandemic?

I like to jump on the first point of contact. Whether it’s an email or a phone call, it’s an opportunity to build a relationship with the broker and from there grow the relationship either through face-to-face support face or virtual, especially now that technology has evolved during the pandemic. Anyone else hears the MS Teams ringtone in their sleep… I do.

What personal talent/skill is most valuable to do your job?

Be a people person – people buy people! And second, having a good knowledge of your product and service is a skill in its own right. We work in an ever-changing and fast-paced industry, so remembering and keeping up to date with the criteria changes that happen so often can be a difficult task.

What personal talent/skill would you most like to improve?

Prioritization. I try to manage everything as I go. So if I’m in the middle of something, I can often lose track of time. I’m learning things unfortunately I just have to wait!

Where would you rather be stuck, in bumper-to-bumper traffic or back-to-back Zoom calls?

Bumper-to-Bumper Traffic – I might not go anywhere, but at least I can pick the soundtrack.

What’s the best career-related advice you’ve ever received?

Learn the art of resilience. I am a sensitive soul.

What is the most original/unique real estate transaction you have been involved in?

We see many non-standard properties through buy to let generally those above or below commercial will be considered – a refurbishment of a former nuclear bomb shelter however was a bit too quirky.

What was your motivation for choosing business development as a career?

I like to chat and build relationships, I am very sociable. With extensive underwriting knowledge to my credit with Accord, it felt only right to put the expertise and personality on the road with the aim of growing our mortgage business even further into buy-to-let and the residential.

If you could do any other job in the real estate industry, what would it be and why?

I’ve always liked the idea of a real estate agent, I’m curious and would love to see into everyone’s homes!

What did you want to grow?

A teacher, closely followed by a hairstylist – who I’m proud to say I passed, so if anyone is looking for a cut and blow dry let me know.

What’s your favorite face mask design/pattern to wear?

Of course, Accord mortgages marked one.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

To be able to turn chocolate into one of your five a day.

And finally, what is the weirdest question you have ever been asked?

What is your minimum income on buy-to-let? I’m still shocked that people don’t know we don’t have one.
