macOS Monterey with new Safari browser and Universal Control available as a free update on October 25
Apple announced Monday that macOS Monterey will be available as the last operating system for Mac computers on October 25. The new macOS was presented at WWDC 2021 in June and is intended as the successor to macOS Big Sur launched last year. macOS Monterey 12 comes with a list of changes to provide a smoother experience when using multiple Apple devices. It also includes features like SharePlay and Focus, also available on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. Additionally, the macOS update brings Universal Control and AirPlay to Mac to further strengthen Apple’s continuity and give users a more unified experience. on Apple devices.
MacOS Monterey Features
Unlike macOS Big Sur which brought a big interface upgrade to the Mac world, macOS Monterey is more about improving the user experience with a list of behind-the-scenes changes. It brings universal control to allow users to multitask between Mac and iPad seamlessly using a single mouse and keyboard. The universal control feature also allows users to work with Apple Pencil. This makes it possible to embed the drawing and sketch that you make on your iPad directly into a Keynote slide on your Mac.
Apple also provided AirPlay to Mac via macOS Monterey. It allows users to read, present and share content from your iPhone or iPad to your Mac, wirelessly. You can also use your Mac’s audio system as an AirPlay speaker using the update.
For an enhanced productivity experience, macOS Monterey offers Quick Notes. This allows you to take important notes while browsing a website or using an app. The new version of macOS also comes with shortcuts which launched on iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 last year. It helps automate tasks on a Mac. Apple has also provided a dedicated shortcut editor for Mac to allow users to customize shortcuts according to their needs.
The macOS Monterey update also brings a new Safari browser with an all-new tab design. It also includes tab groups to save and manage multiple tabs under one title. Plus, there’s an updated FaceTime with spatial audio support and a new grid view.
Apple provided its SharePlay integration in macOS Monterey to allow users to share their movies, TV shows, and projects with friends and family during a FaceTime call.
For users who have an iCloud subscription, macOS Monterey offers iCloud + access with features like Hide My Email and iCloud Private Relay. There is also spatial audio support which is limited to the newer Mac machines and can be experienced on AirPods (3rd gen), AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max.
How to download macOS Monterey
macOS Monterey will be available for download on Mac devices including MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini that currently run macOS Big Sur. The new version of macOS will automatically reach eligible Mac devices when it releases on October 25. However, you can manually check for the update by going to System Preferences > Software update after clicking on the Apple menu icon in the upper left corner of your computer screen. You will also get the update by visiting the About this Mac setting in the Apple menu.
The macOS Monterey version will come pre-installed on the new MacBook Pro (2021) models that Apple launched at its âUnleashedâ event on Monday.
