Taika Waititi and Rita Ora play beer pong and drink champagne by the bottle at the MTV EMAs

Taika Waititi and Rita Ora appeared backstage, in another outfit change, to present the award for best pop and a half-drunk bottle of champagne to Taylor Swift at the MTV EMA Awards on Monday morning.

It was Waititi’s return to the event after ditching his partner who changed into a number seven outfit to play a game of beer pong using German tankards against pop star Bebe Rexha.

Waititi had appeared on a couch in red loungewear and slippers moments earlier, telling Ora he needed some time off.

“I’m on my sixth costume change, I need a break,” joked the Kiwi filmmaker.

“Being a pop star is exhausting.”

Sitting at nine costume changes for Ora and seven for Waititi, the pair appear to be setting a record while hosting one of the biggest musical nights of the year at the awards show in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The couple and the packed arena were ready for a party at what is known as one of the world’s most informal and often controversial music awards.

“I want you to get hammered,” Ora said, as Waititi told the crowd he was looking to spice things up and betting on who would take home the grand prize of the night.

From the red carpet earlier in the evening, the British pop star arrived wearing a long black and red fishnet jumpsuit with floral embroidery and a plunging neckline. She made her return as host of the awards, this time alongside her partner, Kiwi filmmaker Waititi, who wore a classic black suit.

The couple appeared on stage after a performance by pop star David Guetta, after completing the first of Ora’s promised ‘100 outfit changes’.

Waititi opted for a flashy purple suit while Ora wore a two-piece white outfit with a mid-thigh slit – the pair promised many more outfit changes to come.

“Rita has a lot of costume changes…I’ll try to keep up with her,” Waititi told the crowd, joking that he knows fans have an attention span of about “three minutes.”

“So I’ll try to follow.”

“We’re all here to have a good time,” the Kiwi director said of the night, known to be one of the most entertaining and often controversial at world music awards.

“Do what you want!”

The awards are voted for entirely by the public and include 17 awards in 17 gender-neutral categories, with Harry Styles and Taylor Swift tipped to clean up this year.

The event is notoriously filled with unexpected moments on stage. Bono called the French president a wanker in 1995, while Metallica got banned in 1996. Borat made a controversial cross-dressing joke in 2005 and in 2013 Miley Cyrus lit a joint on stage while accepting an award , for his song Wrecking Ball.
